This document is a summary of the new points based immigration system which started operation at the beginning of January 2008. The new system operates using 5 tiers which help to classify the different types of immigrant. It is designed to be much more user friendly and less bureaucratic. It also means that the Government can control migration more effectively, tackle abuse and identify the most talented workers
