Teacher/Careers Advisor

As a teacher or careers advisor in a school or college, advising students on the different careers and opportunities available is a huge task with enormous responsibilities. You play a key part in shaping the careers of your students.

The Improve website has been designed to be the source of information about careers and opportunities across the food and drink manufacturing sector.

Food and Drink Manufacturing is one of the largest sectors in the UK. As an industry we currently employ over 650,000 people in over 30,000 companies in the UK and make up 17% of UK Manufacturing GDP.

Improve is the sector skills council for food and drink manufacturing and processing. We cover the following areas:
• Bakery
• Brewery
• Dairy
• Distillery
• Drinks Processing
• Food Processing
• Meat and Poultry
• Sea fish

Improve is charged with improving productivity across the industry. To do this, we will become the recognised authority on skills and learning in the food and drink sector. We will also help recruit 100,000 new employees to the sector within the next eight years, retain the existing 550,000 employees and develop the new end existing workforce’s skills.

Academy
Currently in its early stages, the Academy is to be the prestigious UK-wide centre of learning for all people in the food and drinks industry. Training programmes available will include health and safety management; target marketing; soft skills for managers; project management; team leading, problem solving and much more. The Academy will not deliver courses itself, but will act as a facilitator or gateway to training, in partnership with the Government, Food and Drink Industry, education sector and training providers. New entrants to the industry can get involved in the academy to gain qualifications and skills relating to their chosen career. The Academy also offers a Green Card which is a nationally recognised qualification for new entrants to the industry. Apprenticeships
Apprenticeships are another key area we are keen to develop. Apprenticeships do not always have the best image or take up. Awareness of Food and drinks manufacturing apprenticeships in particular is very low. At Improve, we believe apprenticeships are an important first step towards a long-term career for a young people in food and drink. Apprentices really do get the best of both worlds. They get to work towards a qualification while gaining real work experience. They also get to earn money while they are learning. Careers and Vacancies
There are lots of different jobs available in the food and drinks industry from food scientists, to management roles to technical operatives with some of the UK’s largest companies. Recruitment is a major issue in the food and drink industry. The industry faces severe skills shortages and has problems with the recruitment of new staff. Qualifications
GCSEs, S/NVQs, VRQs, BTECs?
There are lots of different food and drink qualifications which cover a wide range of operations as well as food hygiene and food safety. Qualifications are available at levels one to three and can be delivered and assessed in the workplace (S/NVQs) or used to give the technical knowledge and understanding needed to do a job (VRQs).
